Alexander Girard
Hace un par de meses tuve la oportunidad de visitar la exposición de Alexander Girard uno de los diseñadores que más admiro y que se presentó en el Museo Vitra. Doble motivo de alegría, ya que este es uno de mis museos favoritos!
Girard nació en Nueva York, creció en Florencia y se recibió de arquitecto en Roma. Fue uno de los diseñadores más influyentes del siglo 20 e incursionó en el campo del diseño de muebles, productos, interiores y textiles.
Trabajó como director de diseño de la división textil de Herman Miller en 1952. Con sus colores primarios, patrones geométricos y toques de humor, le inyectó alegría y espontaneidad al diseño de esa época.
La reputación de Girard creció en 1959 cuando sus animados diseños de interiores e imagen corporativa en el restaurante "La Fonda del Sol" en Nueva York electrizaron al público. Girard repitió la hazaña para Braniff International Airways a mediados de los 60, al diseñar más de 17.000 artículos diferentes, desde el logotipo hasta los asientos.
Su obra, colorida y alegre, se presenta este año en una gran retrospectiva, en la que se puede apreciar sus principales proyectos, acompañados de sus fuentes de inspiración y sus procesos de trabajo. Sus diseños coloridos, divertidos y llenos de fantasía son una inyección de optimismo y esta exposición es una gran celebración para los que amamos el diseño!

Vor ein paar Monaten hatte ich Gelegenheit eine Ausstellung von Alexander Girard zu besuchen. Doppelt Freude, denn er ist einer meiner Lieblings-Designer und ein Besuch ins Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein ist immer ein Ausflug wert.
1907 in New York geboren und aufgewachsen in Europa, studierte Girard in Rom und London Architektur. Nach dem Studium zog es ihn nach New York zurück. Er war einer der einflussreichsten Designer des 20. Jahrhunderts im Bereich Möbel-, Produkt-, Interieur- und Textil-Design.
Als Leiter der Textilabteilung der Herman Miller Company entwarf Girard eine Vielzahl von Textilien. In vielen Werken widerspiegelt sich seine Vorliebe für fröhliche Farben, geometrische und abstrakte Muster.
1960 bestimmte Girard den Stil der Restaurants „La Fonda del Sol“ und „L’Etoile“. 1965 erschuf der Künstler das gesamte Corporate Design für Braniff. Typisch hierfür waren die leuchtenden Farben und Muster.
Eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für Girard war seine umfangreiche Sammlung von Objekten der Volkskunst. Auf seinen Reisen durch Mexiko, Indien, Ägypten und vielen andern Ländern kamen so schlussendlich über 100‘000 Stück zusammen.
In einer großen Retrospektive kann man seine Projekte, Inspirationsquellen und Arbeitsprozesse bewundern. Seine bunten, lustigen und fantasievollen Designs sind eine grenzenlose Inspiration für diejenigen, die wie ich, das Design lieben!

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to visit the exhibition of Alexander Girard, one of my most admired designers at the Vitra Museum. Double reason for joy, because this is one of my favorite museums!
Girard (1907 –1993) was born in New York, grew up in Florence. Alexander Girard was an architect, interior designer, furniture designer, industrial designer and a textile designer. He was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.
As head of the textile department of the Herman Miller Company Girard designed a variety of textiles. Many of his works reflect his passion for cheerful colors, geometric and abstract patterns.
Girard's reputation grew in 1959 when he designed every aspect of the 'La Fonda del Sol' restaurant located in the Time-Life building in Manhattan, New York. in a Latin American and contemporary theme/style, including menus, matchbooks, tableware and the ceramic tiles on the floors and walls.
His work, colorful and cheerful, is presented this year in a great retrospective, in which you can see his main projects, accompanied by his sources of inspiration and his work processes. Its colorful, fun and full of fantasy designs are an injection of optimism and this exhibition is a great celebration for those of us who love design!
